Lt Col (R) Husin Jazri
Director of NISER, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)
Lt Col (R) Husin Hj Jazri is currently the Director of the National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre (NISER). He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from University of Hartford, Connecticut, USA, a Post Graduate Diploma in System Analysis from UiTM, a Master of Science with Distinction in Information Security from Royal Holloway University of London, UK, and Master in Business Administration from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He holds various professional certifications, namely, Certified System Administrator and Network Security USA (SANS) GIAC Security Essential Certification (GSEC) 2001-2003; Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) from ISC2, USA; and Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) from the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants, USA. Lt Col (R) is also a graduate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia.
Lt Col Husin has completed 17 years of service with the Ministry of Defence and has been assigned to various appointments pertaining to information technology and communication systems. He successfully served as a Staff Officer Computer Systems and Information Warfare at the Department of Communication and Electronics Defence (KOMLEK), Armed Forces Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur. He was also the Acting Director of the Army Information Technology Centre (PUSTEKMA), Army Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur and Project Manager for Sistem Pengurusan Alat Komunikasi dan Elektronik Tentera Darat. This is a logistics system which manages all inventories and distribution of communication and electronic equipment in the Army and Lt Col Husin was an integral part of its operations. Lt Col Husin was also the Communication Officer responsible for managing the operation and security of the Malaysian Army trunk communication centres in the East Coast of Malaysia.
He is the Chairman for the Malaysian Standard Committee for the Information System Group under SIRIM Berhad 2002-2005, the President of the Malaysian IT Security Association (MITSA) 2003/2004/2005 and the Chairman of the Malaysian Vocational Advisory Committee – Information and Communication Technology sector 2003/2004/2005. He also contributed immensely in his position as a panellist for the Malaysian Intensified Research Project Areas (IRPA), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is also a Board Member for the ASEAN Region of the International Security Consortium (ISC) 2, an international association for information security professionals based in USA.
While at NISER, Lt Col Husin undertook several global competitiveness and initiative actions. Through his foresight, NISER became as one of the co-founders of the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) and became a member of the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), based at Carnegie Mellon University, U.S.A. Largely due to his fine leadership, NISER was appointed by the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications to represent Malaysia as the focal CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) in the ASEAN forum.
Lt Col Husin contributed much to his community, and to the society-at-large, by way of articles that he wrote in several magazines and newspapers, lectures that he delivered at universities and literary clubs, and his participation in several literary, technological and cultural associations, Lt Col Husin has raised to such new challenges particularly in the arena of cyber security that NISER is now renowned for its extensive research and incident handling capabilities.
Lt Col Husin was awarded the Armed Forces Warrior Medal from the Royal Highness King of Malaysia in the year 2003 as well as the Excellent Service Award in 1995 by the Ministry of Defence, Malaysia. He was also bestowed with the UiTM Director’s Excellent Award, Malaysia in 1992. He has demonstrated a good commitment in strengthening the national security and promoting development agenda for Malaysia in the cyber security sphere.
