Manila, May 06, 2004 – IDC predicts a sound year for the Philippines PC market as shipment is estimated to reach 426,521 units this year, growing by 12.1% from 2003. In terms of revenue, however, the market will continue to fall behind due to aggressive pricing and margin erosion, with a forecasted year-on-year growth of 3.8% this year.
According to a study recently conducted by IDC, desktops will continue to constitute the majority of the PC sales in the consumer market and it remains positive toward notebook sales pushed by innovative vendor offerings and lower prices. On the commercial side, the broad base market will continue to generate healthy developments and remain the key focus of PC vendors. Furthermore, interest in mobile computing in the enterprise environment is increasing and will continue to drive the notebook sales.
"Commercial purchases will remain the driver for the PC market. On the consumer side, the market will be positively affected by an increased maturity in PC usage," said Andrew Wong, Senior Analyst, PCs, Printers, Peripherals, and eGovernment, IDC Malaysia.
IDC expects the prices of PCs to continue declining further as competition remains intense, which will drive vendors to initiate aggressive campaigns to stimulate demand and sustain their respective market shares.
