Printer Shipment registered 40% year-on-year growth inQ202, says IDC

29 August, 2002

Jakarta, August 29, 2002 IDC Indonesia's preliminary results of the total Printer in Q2 2002 was close to 132,975 units. The total printer market increased slightly from Q102 but significantly from Q201 with more than 40%.

The reason for the strong growth from 2001 is due to the strengthening of Rupiah and bank restructuring. Although GDP grew by 3.2% and consumer confidence increased by 3.9%, the minimal growth of the printer market from Q102 was due to the World Cup event end of June. With the bank restructuring in Indonesia toward a completion stage, there were huge purchases of line printers in Q202. This was because banks were upgrading their IT infrastructure, including printers.

Although the Inkjet market still dominates 75% of the printer market, the World Cup event had a strong impact on the consumer market. This led to a slight drop in the inkjet market. In addition, most vendors were clearing their old stock in light of new models to be launched the coming quarters. "Although shipments were lower than expected, IDC continues to see vendors' effort in educating consumers on their photo quality printers and also expanding their channels by working closely with large retailers," said Roosman Fajar, analyst for Peripheral and Services. IDC expects this strong effort to boost the sales of inkjet printer shipments in the near future if the economy continues to grow at a healthy rate.

While inkjet has dropped slightly in Indonesia, laser printers registered a 19% growth in the market. HP continued to lead the mono laser printer market with about 95% market share. The growth of shipment was driven by the increasing demand for personal laser printers and upgrades of printer technology. Also, companies were converting to USB ports, since most of the new PCs today come with USB ports.

Although there was a slight growth of SDM in Indonesia, SDM shipments have remained stagnant since Q401. IDC expects the SDM market to remain stagnant if there are no major tenders or promotions in the market. In addition, most commercial firms are moving toward laser or inkjet technology. Thus, SDM usage is only limited to certain industries or departments such as shipping or financial divisions in large corporations. "As SDM has reached the mature market, IDC expects the stronger vendors to dominate the market. Therefore, Epson would continue to lead in the market with more than 90% of market share," said Roosman Fajar.

IDC believes that the Indonesian printer market will continue to flourish in 2H02 with more purchasing from the commercial sector due to year-end financial closing. Some of the vertical markets that will drive printer shipments are financial institutions, manufacturing, retail and telecommunication. "Overall the strengthening of Rupiah will see a positive impact on the printer pricing, thus leading to more attractive promotions for the end-users. This is particularly true for the low-end inkjet printers, targeting at home-users," said Roosman Fajar.

IDC's quarterly tracker, the Indonesian Printer Quarterly Tracker, 2002, is a comprehensive tracker program that unveils the major trends and competitive analysis of the current and future printer market in Indonesia
