| The
Indonesian Mobile Device Market
Displayed Positive Growth Trend
In 3Q08 But Is Expected to Slow
Down In 2009, Says IDC
Jakarta,
12 January, 2009 –
Based on results from IDC's
Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile
Device Tracker, 3Q 2008, Indonesia's
mobile device market grew by
48% in 3Q08 in terms of unit
shipments, compared to the same
quarter in 2007. Innovation
and improvements on handset
functions and features, as well
as price reductions, remain
the key growth drivers.
"Most
manufacturers and distributors
were actively trying to maximize
sales opportunities during the
Hari Raya festive season in
October in order to achieve
quarterly targets. Mobile operators’
intensive efforts in offering
cheaper tariffs and bundled
packages also helped boost mobile
device shipments in the country
during this period," said
Ashadi Cahyadi, Senior Analyst,
Telecommunications Research
at IDC Indonesia.
Traditional
mobile phones grew 52% year-on-year
and contributed 95% of total
shipments in 3Q08. Converged
devices declined by 2% year-on-year.
"In order for converged
devices to continue growing
in the future, the demand for
data connection in the market
has to significantly increase,"
Ashadi added. Handheld device
shipments, on the other hand,
grew strongly at 84% as compared
to same quarter in 2007, with
majority of shipments intended
for corporate customers.
During 4Q08,
vendors are expected to continue
to capitalize on the Christmas
and New Year’s promotions to
close targets for the year.
Nonetheless, IDC anticipates
a decline in unit shipments
in Q408, as the gloomy economic
situation led people to be more
prudent in spending. This trend
is expected to continue in 2009.
