Massive Growth in Laser MFP Shipments in 2006 with More Than 2 Million Units, IDC Says
13 March, 2007
Singapore and Hong Kong, March 13, 2007 – According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly MFP Tracker report 4Q06, the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) MFP market grew 28% over the previous year, totaling 8.1 million units in 2006. It was yet another bumper year for laser MFP vendors as laser MFP shipments recorded a whopping 46% increase over 2005 and soared to slightly more than 2 million units in 2006.
The major highlight in 2006 was strong printer-based laser MFP growth, with shipments increasing 64% over the previous year to garner 1.1 million units. Despite the ongoing cannibalization from printer-based laser MFPs in the 1-20ppm segment, copier-based laser MFP vendors continued to experience strong sales through pushing for earlier upgrades and replacements to higher speed models. This form factor grew 25% in unit shipments in 2006 to reach 580,000 units, exceeding fax-based laser MFP sales by 79% during the same period.
“1-20ppm printer-based laser MFPs will continue to do well over the next 5 years (2006-2011) as low-priced offerings in this market segment are penetrating homes and replacing inkjet and laser printers,” said Francine Khoo, Senior Analyst for IDC's Asia/Pacific MFP Research. “In addition, the increasing number of network capable laser MFPs in the 1-20ppm market segment will see greater adoption from small and medium-sized companies due to falling prices and the modest price differential to A4 sized copiers, single function faxes as well as laser printers.”
Highlights of product migration includes:
- IDC expects the number of 21-30ppm devices configured as desktop, personal use MFPs to continue increasing. This speed segment should gain market share at the expense of other speed segments. Nonetheless, IDC does not anticipate the development of desktop, personal devices in the 31-44ppm segment until very late in the forecast period, if at all.
- 31ppm and above printer-based laser MFP shipments will compete with similar offerings from copier vendors by 2010 as printer-based laser MFP vendors are likely to launch better price-performance offerings to better penetrate enterprises.
- Whilst fax-based laser MFPs continue to cannibalize single function faxes, they will be cannibalized by the wider product placement of printer-based laser MFPs. IDC expects the Average Selling Value (ASV) of fax-based laser MFPs to fall below US$300 by 2008.
- 1-44ppm monochrome copier-based laser MFPs were favored as the entry level choice in most instances but growth in this segment is likely to slow down as users looking to upgrade will opt for color or higher-speed machines.
- Color MFP constituted 5% of overall laser MFP shipments in 2006. This market segment is expected to reach 9% by 2011 driven by falling hardware prices as well as lower running costs or cost-per-page.
All countries across the Asia/Pacific region experienced positive growth with India, the Philippines and PRC showing the strongest uptake. While all countries are expected to show a positive CAGR for laser MFPs through 2011, India, PRC and Vietnam are expected to witness the strongest CAGR as these developing economies currently have a comparatively lower laser MFP penetration.
From an ASV perspective, IDC believes the ASVs for A3-sized devices will need to decrease to more effectively compete against lower-cost A4 options. As users discover their low A3 usage, lower cost A4 models should gain greater traction in the market. While A3 devices will survive since selected users will need larger-size media support on monochrome laser MFPs, the threat from lower-cost A4 configurations will be greater than ever.
