The strategic use of information is increasingly at the heart of many successful business models, which means that being able to easily create, share and ensure the safety of data is a top priority for IT and business leaders from Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs). SMBs require hardware and software solutions that will provide a stable path to future growth while reducing IT costs, including ongoing management and training costs. Starting small and thinking big - consolidation is the first step towards easier management, better protection and faster backup and recovery for SMBs' information. This means getting started on networked storage, an arena that has become progressively simpler and more affordable. |

Since the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the business landscape has changed significantly for Malaysian industries. Enterprises of all sizes face increasingly tough business environment until today. To remain competitive, a company must formulate the strategy and develop the execution system to handle business challenges effectively. Information and communication technology (ICT) provides industries with effective means of achieving their business objectives. However, for small and medium businesses (SMBs), ICT has always been seen complicated to employ, extremely luxurious and costly, and not appropriate or applicable to what the workplace needs. AsiaEP believes that adopting ICT to your business advantage is all about People, Process and Technology. Business performance is determined by Process. Process is enabled by Technology. And it is People that make the systems work. And the most important of all is to provide the People with e-Business knowledge.
This presentation reviews the changes in the business landscape both in the global and regional arenas. It describes how ICT can help industries meet their new business objectives. It also analyses the dilemmas that SMBs face in adopting to technologies. Finally, it presents how AsiaEP sees the SMBs’ success in utilizing ICT to their business advantages through AsiaEP’s Certified E-Business Professional (ACEP) Program. |

"SMBs in Malaysia: Crossing the Threshold of the New Economic Paradigm" Staying Competitive In The New Economy and the Role of the MCA ICT Resource Centre" |

Andrew TF Wong
CEO MCA ICT Resource Centre |

Small and medium businesses (SMBs) of today are crossing the threshold of a new economic paradigm where globalization, trade liberalization and the new economy are the order of the day. A report recently published by Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC) stated that ten percent of manufacturing establishments have ceased operations by the end of 1998 due to the prevailing financial crisis, with SMBs serving the domestic market that utilize imported products being the most affected. Under this economic reality, SMBs in Malaysia have to become more competitive to stay afloat in the global market race. Their main concerns now revolve around the need to stay resilient and carve a niche market for their products and services. With these goals in mind, issues such as upgrading the IT skills, adopting new technologies and coping up with the changes in the new economy need to be emphasized. It is for this reason that the MCA ICT Resource Centre has initiated means to assist the SMBs in technology adoption and training, thus playing a relevant role in strengthening the SMBs in facing the new challenges of today. |
