Strong PC Uptake in the Outstation Market
Kuala Lumpur, Dec 15, 2007 – The PC market in Malaysia improved 24.02% sequentially and increased 36.5% year-on-year in 3Q07, which was in line with seasonal trends according IDC's latest study, Malaysia Quarterly PC Tracker, 3Q07. 3Q07 once again portrayed a strong quarter for notebooks spearheaded by the consumer space as notebooks encompassed 56.46% of total PC shipments, which cannibalized 8.5% of desktop market share in relation to 2Q07. One of the major reasons for the rise was significantly contributed by strong outstation PC uptake especially from emerging cities like Ipoh, Johor Bahru and Penang.
Since 2007, the PC Fair had been held in at least 8 states across Malaysia covering more than 14 cities in both West and East Malaysia where response from the consumer market had been exemplary. The PC fairs enticed consumers in purchasing PC’s as the prices are slashed down tremendously and coupled with easy payment schemes such as monthly installments, which suit most low to mid income earners. In addition to that, after sales service centers like Highpoint Service Networks Sdn Bhd. instill confidence within customers, as they currently comprise of 14 branches across Malaysia.
In conjunction to that, significant channel expansions to penetrate the untapped PC market had been going on over the past 2 to 3 years in locations outside Klang Valley. Vendors were also very keen on tying up deals with distributors and dealers with strong customer base following the trust factor which is very important in this part of the world where most consumers will only buy PCs from their trusted dealers or retailers. More recently, a local player collaborated with Courts Mammoth, taking advantage of its 62 branches across Malaysia to broaden their customer based through the “GET IT” program which fared very well.
