Malaysia hardcopy peripherals market revenue surpasses US$200 million for the first time, says IDC

07 April, 2006

Kuala Lumpur, April 07, 2006 – The Malaysia hardcopy peripherals market experienced a 3% growth in volume to 918,489 units in 2005. According to a recent IDC study on Malaysia peripherals market, revenue has surpassed US$200 million for the first time last year, which was mainly contributed by the revenue growth in the multifunction printer category, especially in the inkjet multifunction printer segment.

The research also showed that Malaysia hardcopy peripherals market was still dominated by inkjet single function printer, which made up 58.7% of total hardcopy peripherals shipments in 2005. The detailed breakdown by technology is shown as below:

However, IDC expects the unit share of inkjet single function printer to drop due to the cannibalization of inkjet multifunction printer. "More vendors are offering entry-level inkjet MFP to further tap into the demand for MFPs," said Emily Tee, Peripherals Research Analyst, IDC Malaysia. "The decreasing price of inkjet MFPs was an encouraging factor that drove the growth of inkjet MFPs. In 2003, the price gap between an inkjet MFP cost 10.1 times more than an inject single function printer. We saw the price gap dropped to 7.5 times in 2005. This means that inkjet MFP becomes more affordable to end-users. A cheapest inkjet MFP cost about RM500 in 2003; nevertheless, users can purchase one inkjet MFP with less than RM250 nowadays."

The laser MFP market meanwhile grew at a rate of 53.9% from 2004 surpassing 30,000 units in 2005. IDC Malaysia's Associate Peripherals Analyst, Ivan Jan added that, "The laser MFP have already attracted scores of projects and tenders from both the commercial and government sectors due to its functionalities and more attractive rental scheme, particularly copier-based laser MFP."

The top 3 vendors in 2005, namely Canon, HP and Epson continued to account for more than 80% share in term of shipments. These three vendors performed well in inkjet MFP market with HP led the market and captured almost 50% share in shipments term.

Which technology has the strongest potential? "Besides that inkjet MFP, laser printer will continue to gain ground especially from color segment. Color laser printer priced below US$900 will still see double-digit growth with falling color printing cost and increasing user awareness and interest," said Ms. Tee.
