Reaching a new mark: Malaysia PC market sailed past 1 million in unit shipments in 2005, says IDC

20 March, 2006

Kuala Lumpur, March 20, 2006 – IDC has recently released the final results of its Malaysia PC market study for the 4 th quarter of 2005. The results show the Malaysia PC market decreasing by 6% sequentially but still grew by 16% for the year and totaled 296,288 units in the fourth quarter of 2005. The PC market went over the million shipment mark with 1.1 million unit PCs shipped in 2005.

In addition, IDC has found the following key highlights in the 4Q05 Malaysia PC market:

  • There was sustained consumer demand for notebooks in 4Q05 as vendors continued to push their offerings through aggressive marketing drives. Coupled with lower prices, consumers responded with enthusiasm in 4Q05. The strong push by notebook vendors' was the underlying factor in sustaining demand.
  • Most vendors were pessimistic about the consumer market in 4Q05, particularly as most buyers have learned to hold off on purchases until the PC fair in December. Over the past two years, both consumers and SMB buyers have increasingly chosen to seek bargains at the PC fair instead of buying them from a retailer. These buyers have also been spoiled by an increase in frequency of these fairs as well as the greater diversity of locations. As PC fairs become increasingly commonplace, there is less of an urgency to take a purchase.
  • The total consumer desktop market contracted 4% sequentially and expanded slightly by 1% year-on-year. This came in below initial forecasts due to softer demand as more consumers opted for notebooks. Consumers were also uninspired by the stagnating product lines; and apart from the Media Center desktops, PC vendors have not had any other successful new ideas or concepts.

Andrew Wong, Research Manager, IDC Malaysia noted “Dell leapt from the third spot to the top spot in 4Q05, thanks to its success in winning several commercial projects. As a result, HP dropped to the number two position, although its market share remained unchanged at 18%. Acer, in turn, dropped one spot to number three, as its shipments returned to normalcy after its 3Q05 peak.”

“Lenovo, FTEC, and BlueDot respectively maintained their positions. Toshiba climbed two places, replacing MIMOS, which fell out of the Top 10 after its brief appearance in the previous quarter. Twinhead maintained its eighth spot. Meanwhile, Fujitsu entered the Top 10 ranking in ninth position after it won a notable government project during the quarter. NEC rounded up the ranking at number ten,” stated Mr. Wong.
