Malaysia Hardcopy Peripherals (HCP): Highest Revenue Recorded in Q3 2007 Kuala Lumpur, 16th January 2008: According to IDC A/P Q3 2007 HCP tracker, the Malaysia Hardcopy Peripherals has taken a bounce back after a sluggish quarter in Q2 where both the consumer and commercial markets were both dry. On the contrary, Q3 was supplemented with favorable economy sentiments, thus a double-digit growth was observed for both shipment units as well as revenue. In Q3 2007, the hardcopy peripherals shipment units recorded a growth of 18%, totaling 322,895 units and revenue recorded first-time high at US$75.8, grew 13% compared to last quarter.
It was observed that the single-function and multifunction inkjets as well as single-function and multifunction lasers drove this healthy growth; both technologies (inkjet and laser) grew at the same pace between 19-20%. With the price gap continue to narrow between a single-function and a multifunction Inkjet Printer; it was observed a whopping growth of 42% for multifunction inkjet printers while single-function inkjet printer was creeping at a rate of 6%. “As at Q3 2007, a multifunction inkjet printer was only 1.5 times more costly than a single-function inkjet printer compared to 1.8 times a year ago”, said Annie Beh, Peripherals Research Analyst, IDC Malaysia. With the convergence in the price gap, cannibalization rate of multifunction inkjet ratio had taken a leap, 45%, an increased of 7-percentage points from Q2 2007.
On the other hand, both the single-function and multifunction laser printers enjoyed a double-digit growth in Q3 2007 (22% for single-function laser printer and a 12% growth for multifunction laser printer.) Ms. Annie added that, “besides the encouraging purchasing power from the commercial market, the strong growth in the single-function laser printer was too driven by the public sector in tandem with the 5-years 9MP initiative that started to roll out since December 2006”. The shipment units of around 6,200 (single-function laser printers only) to the public sector has indirectly impacted the multifunction laser printers ratio, where it was observed a ratio of 20.1%, a drop of 1.4-percentage points compared to last quarter.
