IDC expects total desktop and notebook PC shipments in Malaysia to reach over 1 million units in 2005

19 September, 2005

Kuala Lumpur, September 19, 2005 – IDC recently concluded a study on the competitive analysis of desktop and notebook PC vendors in Malaysia, entitled “Malaysia Desktop and Notebook PC 2005 – 2009 Vendor Analysis: A Competitive Vendor Analysis”. In this study, IDC notes that the Malaysia PC market is expected to experience robust growth from 2004 to 2005 for both the desktop and notebook PC segments. In fact, a 14% year-on-year growth is projected for 2005 with rates of 8% and 29% for the desktop and notebook PC segments, respectively.

HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo/IBM are leading the pack in terms of both unit shipment and revenue for the desktop PC segment. It is interesting to note that the top 3 desktop PC vendors took almost 35% of the total desktop PC market share in 2004 and almost 38% in 1H05. The market dominance of large vendors also allowed them to dictate the trends in the notebook PC segment, as was very evident in 2004, as almost 50% of the total market share belonged to the top 3 notebook PC vendors — Acer, HP, and Dell.

"IDC also identified the four major mistakes vendors often made in their respective fields in this study — using inappropriate levels of competition, having mistaken perceptions of attaining competitive advantages, mismanaging go-to-market strategies, and utilizing misleading information. The message that there was something wrong with the way vendors managed and implemented their strategies as well as their assumptions about the proper level of competition to use tended to mislead them was made very clear," says Andrew Wong, Research Manager, IDC Malaysia. "To counter such deficiencies, IDC has, therefore, identified three trajectories — cost-efficient component sourcing, strategic resource and operation management, and flexible channel management — that will not only ensure the survival of the vendors in a hyper-competitive marketplace but will also assure them that their businesses will continue to flourish ”, he adds.
