"ICT Transformation X.0"

  Selinna Chin
Managing Director of IDC Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand

We have seen the IT and communications landscape change before, from the era of mainframe computing to personal computing to the Internet era. But now, awash in endless innovation, the industry and market are in continual transformation. Advances are no longer coming in discrete waves, like software releases of yore (version 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, et cetera), but more or less continuously. Directions 2008 will examine all the ways the world of IT and communications is changing -- from globalization to virtualization, from software as a service to services as software, from changing network technology to the technology of social networks -- and how those changes will affect customers, suppliers, and you. A dozen years from now the ICT landscape will be as unrecognizable as today's would be to anyone in the early 1990s. The opening session sets the stage for the rest of the day.

9:40am - 10:10am The Tech x.0 Savvy Enterprise: New Rules, New Business Models

    Sandra Ng
Group Vice President, Asia/Pacific Communications, Peripherals and Services Research, IDC Asia/Pacific

The marketplace, regardless of industry and geographic differences, is becoming more complex and competitive. Emerging technologies, dynamic business forces and disruptive players are driving companies to transform their IT environment and business operations/processes to move up the growth curve. Many companies, regardless of size, are investing in people and technologies with the goal of achieving more within a shorter period of time. IT vendors and service providers, facing similar challenges, are under pressure to respond to these changes. Products are introduced via many solutions. Messages are communicated in different dimensions and colors. Mastering the changing rules require well-orchestrated and executed business models. In this presentation, Sandra will share with you the top of minds' priorities of business and IT leaders and the technologies and business models that will gain attention with these executives and their users.

10:10am -10:40am Services Transformation: How New Business Models, Globalization and Web 2.0 Are Redefining CIO
    Sourcing Strategies

    Eugene Wee
Research Manager, Asia/Pacific IT Services Research

With the focus squarely on technology driving enterprise innovation while at the same time reducing costs, CIOs in the Asia/Pacific region are being asked to investigate new ways to use hardware, software and services in order to fuel business transformation. In the context of services, the combination of hosted delivery models, utility computing, global sourcing and next generation web technologies are not only driving dynamic changes in how customers are consuming IT and business process services, but are also setting the stage for a potential tectonic shift in the player environment. Vendors are being forced to continually innovate with regards their delivery capabilities and partner ecosystems in order to survive, to the potential benefit of the end-users. This session will provide insight into how this transformation is enabling new players to enter the market, requiring the creation of new ecosystems, resetting pricing structures, shifting the means of innovation, and driving the need for a new governance model, all of which will impact not just service providers but also technology firms. This session will also provide guidance on what vendors should do to manage the impact of these changes on their businesses.

11:00am - 11:30am Software as a Service: Shifting into New Gear

    Dr. Patrick Chan
Chief Technology Advisor, IDC Asia/Pacific Emerging Technologies, IDC Asia/Pacific

Software as a Service (SaaS) concept has disruptively entered the enterprise software market in the last few years. Increased pressure on enterprises and startups to move at a pace faster than before has steered new focus on software requirements. IDC reflects on the existing Software as a Service market, end-user perceptions, and emerging offerings in the Asia/Pacific market that are shaping the future of software. Enterprises and consumers will need software but software of tomorrow is definitely changing, in terms of usage, delivery, subscription and management. This session will shed light on the business and technological properties of these new emerging Software as a Service offerings and innovations that are bound to stir thoughts and benefit the audience in the long run. Take note and keep pace.

11:30am - 12:00pm Unified Communications: Powering Communication for Next Gen Work Style

Research Manager, Asia/Pacific Communications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific

Unified Communications is redefining the manner in which devices and applications are being used for communication. It is gradually bringing applications, devices, telephony and presence into its fold to create a cohesive business communication experience. In doing so, it is helping enterprises realize their vision of a new work environment that is more conducive for a distributed workforce. As "screenagers" swarm into the workplace, enterprises need to introduce communication modes that bridge the telephony and internet age. In this presentation, IDC provides a fresh perspective on the emerging virtual work environments which are driving collaboration and productivity. It discusses how unified communication powers these work environments. IDC provides insights on early trends on unified communications adoption in Asia/Pacific as vendors steer customers on the path of unifying communication.

    Claus Mortensen
Principal, Asia/Pacific Emerging Technologies Research, IDC Asia/Pacific

The booming adoption of Web 2.0 is rewriting ways in which marketers and advertisers reach their consumers. While online media offer a huge potential to engage audiences, Internet users are also becoming more savvy, fragmented, fickle and selective with their media choices. Using the results of regional surveys, Claus Mortensen will demonstrate how marketers are spending their ad dollars, and whether their focus is in line with consumer motivations, perceptions and preferences of Web-based advertisements. The implications for viral marketing and future directions for online strategies are then discussed.
